Climate change has become one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the world today. The impacts are not only limited to deteriorating air quality and rising temperatures, but also include an increased risk of global flooding. As global temperatures increase, rainfall patterns and atmospheric humidity undergo significant changes, ultimately affecting river flow patterns and drainage systems. One of the main factors contributing to flood risk is the increase in extreme rainfall. Data shows that a warmer climate increases the atmosphere’s ability to hold water vapor, often producing heavy rains in some areas that cause flash flooding. For example, studies by the IPCC show that extreme rainfall events have increased significantly in some parts of the world. Densely populated areas that are usually unprepared for heavy rainfall are highly vulnerable to flooding. Climate change is also causing melting of polar and mountain ice, which is contributing to sea level rise. This rise makes coastal areas more vulnerable to flooding, especially during storms and high tides, which can result in infrastructure damage and loss of natural habitat. A World Bank report estimates that millions of people in coastal areas are at risk of losing their homes due to annual flooding. In the context of urbanization, many cities struggle to cope with inadequate infrastructure. Drainage channels designed to manage normal rainfall are often not effective enough to handle the extreme rainfall that is becoming more common. This causes water to pool on the roads which can disrupt people’s mobility and damage property. In addition, the impact of deforestation and land transfer contributes to flood risk. Forests function as natural buffers that absorb rainwater, but the development of agricultural land and housing reduces this ability. Research shows that vegetation loss worsens the speed of water flow, causing an increase in the frequency and intensity of flooding. Adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change are crucial to facing this flood risk. Sustainable approaches such as the use of green technologies and climate-oriented development can reduce the impact of inevitable changes. In addition, community education and preparedness are very important in reducing losses due to flooding. Each country must formulate concrete strategies to improve drainage efficiency and maintain green open spaces. Coordination between government, communities and the private sector will greatly determine success in reducing the risk of flooding caused by climate change. With proactive and collaborative steps, we can address these challenges effectively and protect society from wider adverse impacts.
