Parliament’s two Houses work on behalf of UK citizens to check/challenge Government, make/shape effective laws and debate/make decisions on the big issues. They do this to improve people’s living standards and provide a more secure, prosperous future for generations to come. This week, the Prime Minister will appear before the Commons Liaison Committee while the Chancellor and the new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP will be quizzed by their colleagues. The Assisted Dying Bill has its Second Reading in the Lords, and MPs will consider bills on renters’ rights, bus services and pensions. The Government will be challenged on Gaza, the Chagos Islands and people smuggling/grooming gangs during a Commons Question Time. The Chancellor and the Defence Secretary will also be questioned on their roles and policies. There are also a series of Committee hearings, including the youngest ever MP to appear before a select committee, Lisa Nandy appearing before the Culture Committee and Lord Hermer facing a pre-appointment hearing by the Constitution Committee.
MEPs will vote on two motions of censure against the Commission. In a plenary debate, the authors of the two motions will take the floor first, followed by one round of political group speakers, and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
